What captivated us about Château Cassemichère was the way history and family legacy are still very much alive within the estate. Its extraordinary connection to the origins of Muscadet is given a contemporary voice through the artwork that now adorns the château, telling the story of the estate and the families behind it, while even the bottle artwork offers a modern interpretation of that same heritage. We loved that balance — a château proud of its past, yet confident enough to express its story in a fresh and creative way.
History
Château Cassemichère is a historic wine estate in La Chapelle-Heulin, at the heart of the Nantais vineyards, with a history dating back to 1601, when Roland Giraud acquired the noble house. The estate is closely linked to the story of Muscadet, notably through a 1740 notarial act in which the word “Muscadet” appears in connection with the property, supporting its reputation as one of the wine’s historic cradles. Since 2005, the Ganichaud family has continued the estate’s winegrowing tradition while developing its vineyard visits, tastings and wine-tourism offering.
Philosophy
The estate’s identity is rooted in continuity, fidelity to Muscadet and careful vineyard work. Its historic motto is presented as “Ni téméraire, Ni timidité, Fidélité” – neither recklessness nor timidity, but fidelity. Winemaking is tailored to the cuvée selective picking according to maturity, long and gentle pressing, temperature-controlled stainless-steel fermentation and regular lees work are described for sur-lie wines, while the premium 1601 cuvée uses selected parcels and partial malolactic fermentation with barrel ageing to build complexity.
Terroir
The vineyards sit on predominantly gneiss-based geology with clay-sandy / sandy-clay soils, characteristic of this part of the Armorican massif. The wider Nantais climate is oceanic, moderated by Atlantic influence, supporting the freshness and natural tension associated with Melon de Bourgogne and Muscadet.
Sustainability
Château Cassemichère holds Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification, recognising environmentally responsible vineyard management and consideration for biodiversity and natural resources. The historic estate is surrounded by vineyards and woodland, reinforcing the close relationship between its wines and the landscape of the Nantais.
