At Monmousseau, something truly special happens underground. Walking through the extraordinary tuffeau galleries, surrounded by bottles ageing quietly in the darkness and immersive artwork illuminating the ancient stone, we were drawn into a world where wine, patience and imagination seem to become one. With a tradition of fine sparkling wine dating back to 1886 and some 15 kilometres of cellars beneath Montrichard, Monmousseau captured the sense of magic and discovery we want people to feel when they encounter a Maison Vintique wine.
History
Monmousseau was founded in 1886 by Alcide Monmousseau, who established a successful wine merchant business in Montrichard and recognised the suitability of the town’s vast tuffeau limestone quarries for ageing wine. His nephew and successor, Justin-Marcel Monmousseau, identified similarities between the terroirs and grapes of Touraine and Champagne and developed fine sparkling wines using the traditional bottle-fermentation method. Within a few years the house gained international recognition, with wines exported overseas by the early 20th century and widely distributed by 1930. The Monmousseau family dynasty continued until 1994. Today the house remains recognised as a leading Touraine specialist in fine traditional-method sparkling wines.
Philosophy
Their approach is built around finesse, patience and heritage. The house emphasises careful grape selection, precision during pressing to retain the ‘heart of the pressing’ / Coeur de Cuvée, traditional craftsmanship and sufficient time for each cuvée to develop. Chenin Blanc is central to the house style. Depending on the cuvée, winemaking can include temperature-controlled stainless steel, partial barrel vinification, bâtonnage and long ageing sur lattes. Slow riddling and low dosage are used to preserve freshness, aromatic purity and tension.
Terroir
Monmousseau is based in Montrichard in Touraine, at the heart of the Loire Valley. The region combines a temperate Loire climate with a mosaic of soils including clay-limestone and flint. The house’s underground cellars are carved into tuffeau, the soft local limestone historically quarried for Loire châteaux. Producer material describes soils over tuffeau with granitic sand, clay or flint depending on the site, giving wines floral, saline, lively and complex characters. The 15 km cellar network provides stable ageing conditions at around 12°C with naturally favourable humidity.
Sustainability
Monmousseau combines its historic winemaking heritage with a thoughtful approach to its natural environment. Its remarkable tuffeau cellars provide naturally stable conditions for the long ageing of its wines, while biodiversity initiatives include the protection of bat habitats within the historic cave network. As part of Orchidées Maisons de Vin, Monmousseau also sits within a broader programme focused on more responsible viticulture, reduced inputs and careful stewardship of natural resources.
